Synopsis: Polarization plays an important role in the field of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing but we all ignore its influence on remote observation. Light is an electromagnetic wave vector, with three basic parameters, amplitude, frequency and phase, in its scalar propagation equation, which is the physical basis of four major resolutions (radiation resolution, spectral resolution, spatial resolution and temporal resolution) of optical remote sensing. Polarization, the fourth basic parameter of light wave, refers to the asymmetry of the light cross section perpendicular to the propagation direction. Polarization has been studied in physical optics and applied in many fields, for example, precision instruments and microscopic observations. With mature physical basis, Polarization Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry has been greatly developed.

Researchers from all over the world have been studying, exploring and exceeding theories, methods of PRSP for more than 30 years and has made considerable progress, especially in PRSP physical theories, polarization effect in high resolution quantitative remote sensing and precision detection capability. The general results are as follows: optical remote sensing (such as hyperspectral, infrared) images, combining with polarization technology, can increase the contrast ratio of 2-3 orders of magnitude; for snow and ice, water quality, environmental pollution, rock density and roughness, petrol spill, vegetation biomass, air pollution particle detection and remote sensing atmospheric attenuation etc.. Polarization remote sensing has its unique detection capability.

This thematic session is focus on polarization remote sensing and photogrammetry mainly including the observation methods of sky polarization field distribution and ground objects polarized reflection, researchers have carried out plenty of experiments and surprisingly finding that there are regular polarization field around sky, and the reflected light contains the polarization information of objects’ shape and characters through the intensity of polarized light is slight. Furthermore, the related research results has set up a special issue named Polarization Remote Sensing in International Journal of Remote Sensing (IJRS), this special issue would systematically introduce the key aspects of polarization remote sensing science and technology, including theory, technology and applications, to promote the development of polarization remote sensing.

And the thematic session will fully display the outcomes about PRSP in three aspects:

  1. How to apply PRSP in geographic observations such as land surface quantitative retrieval, water cycle, earth radiation balance, target detection and recognition and related fields.
  2.  How to apply PRSP in ocean and atmospheric remote sensing such as watercolor detection, oil spill detection, radiative transfer modelling, air pollution and aerosols particle analysis, water-gas cycle, greenhouse gas effects and related fields.
  3. How to apply PRSP in space observation, instrumentation and other applications, such as polarization sensors progress, polarization response and calibration, new polarimetric detection methodology, polarization navigation, mapping and related aspects.


International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing is aim at obtain information from image, and polarization information as an essential part is helpful to analysis and interpret the remote sensing image, we has found the theory basis and observation method of polarization remote sensing in order to emphasize the importance of polarization information and fill the gaps in traditional remote sensing.
